A Different
Approach
A Different Approach is a fair trade
wholesaler of Nicaraguan crafts. We began working with the
artisans in Nicaraguan many years
ago after spending a bit of time in Central America.
Nicaragua has many exceptional artisans including potters,
sculptors, painters and weavers. However, most of these
artisans do not have adequate access to markets to provide a
decent living for themselves and their families. The number
of tourists who visit Nicaragua is low compared to its
neighbors, and Nicaragua has not yet developed its
international craft market to the level of other Latin
American nations. We at A Different Approach decided to help
in the expansion of their markets by becoming one outlet
dedicated to bringing these beautiful Nicaraguan crafts to
the American public.

These beautifully hand crafted pieces of pottery come from the village of
San Juan De Oriente, Nicaragua. Well known for its craft work this village
has been a pottery center since pre-Columbian times. Today it is home to a
large pottery cooperative and many family run workshops.
The inspirations are varied with the more traditional styles featuring
strong pre-Columbian images while the contemporary work consists of
geometric, floral or Escher inspired designs. The pottery shown here is not
glazed inside thus is not watertight. A plastic liner must be used if you
intend to put water inside. The glazes are oxides and lead free. |

These lovely Peruvian vases and figures represent
the art from two small towns in Peru, Chulucanas and Ayacucho. The
Chulucanas vases are known for their rich brown and black tones obtained
from smoking them in mango leaves or some other type of organic matter. The
Ayacucho figures which are all hand painted are known for their depiction of
village life or religious scenes. |
