The Wounaan and Embera men from the
Darien of Panama are masters of tagua carving  and cocobolo wood carvings, but it is the
women who weave the baskets. (See exquisite examples of tagua carvings) In earlier times, baskets were woven for
utilitarian uses, but now many villages rely almost exclusively on the
baskets they produce for tourists. This is for our collective gain, as
the baskets produced are of superior quality incorporating imaginative
                        patterns and designs! |
